Review: The House of Night bk1, Marked
Title: Marked (House of night book 1)
Author(s): P.C and Kristen Cast
Publisher: Atom Publishers
When sixteen-year-old Zoey Redbird gets Marked as a fledgling vampire she must join the House of Night school where she will train to become an adult vampire. That is, if she makes it through the Change. But Zoe is no ordinary fledgling. She has been chosen as special by the Goddess Nyx and discovers her amazing new power to conjure the elements: earth, air, fire, water and spirit. When Zoey discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school’s most elite group, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look within herself to embrace her destiny – with a little help from her new vampire friends.
I found this book great to start with. Easy to read and a good story-line. The characters are very well thought out, all with their own background and personalities. And there are some good points but you soon realise that they are repeated over and over again. Everything is going great then she has a fight with her friends, she is torn between a couple of guys and then she makes up with her friends and then she realises that she loves all the guys for different reasons! At one point she is going out with three guys at once!
The vampire part of the book is all well and good but it’s the parts where the authors are trying to be realistic that they fail. This continues through-out the whole series and even though some of the guys change, the scenario stays the same. So the bottom line is: Good fantasy plot but unless you don’t mind the main character being incredibly indecisive about most things then I wouldn’t go for this book.
Rating: 4/10
N.B: This book is NOT suitable for younger readers.
