Review: The Magicians’ Guild, Trudi Canavan

The Magicians' Guild

Title: The Magicians’ Guild

Author: Trudi Canavan

Publisher: Orbit

Description: Each year the magicians of Imardin gather together to purge the city streets of vagrants, urchins and miscreants. Masters of the disciplines of magic, they know that no one can oppose them. But their protective shield is not as impenetrable as they believe. Sonea, angry, frustrated and outraged by the treatment of her family and friends, hurls a stone at the shield, putting all her rage behind it. To the amazement of all who bear witness, the stone passes unhindered through the barrier and renders a magician unconscious. The guild’s worst fear has been realised …There is an untrained magician loose on the streets. She must be found before her uncontrolled powers unleash forces that will destroy both her, and the city that is her home.

Review: This book is one of my all-time favourites. I first read it a few years ago and in light of Trudi Canavan’s new books, I thought it might be good to write about the first books in the series.

In true Fantasy fashion, the second you start this book you are transported right into the character’s world. Everything  in Imardin is so thought out and realistic, it’s hard to believe that one person thought it up! You fall in love with the characters from the start, they’re all so different but they blend together perfectly. The magic is very well described and explained so it almost makes sense (in a weird way).

Although one downside to the first book is that most of it involves the main character running from one place to the other trying to hide from the magicians, even thought we know from the start what their agenda is, so the tension is lost slightly and you almost want her to get caught just so you can get on with the story.

Norman Rating: 7/10

What to read next: This book is the 1st of a trilogy. It is followed by:  “Novice” and “High Lord”. A prequel to this series has just been released “The magician’s apprentice” and a sequel to the trilogy is due to be released in May.

Other books by Trudi Canavan: She has another good Trilogy out which includes: Priestess of the White, Voice of the Gods and Last of the Wilds. These books are most definitely worth the read!
